Thank you for the advice posting. As a newbie amateur in the world of photography, I am looking for clear direction, which you give in spades. Thanks for taking the time to put valuable information out there for the rest of us to feed on.

Thanks for posting. Some great advice. I unfortunately had to learn the hard way that your suggestions are spot on.

Loved this read. Its so real. Especially the feelings of nervousness! Wedding photography is a one-chance deal. There is no sending the bride back down the aisle because you didn't get the shot!

If you're just starting out, or have been hustled into shooting a wedding for a friend, don't be afraid to call around to some of the established photographers in your town.

This year we've been more than happy to bring 2 "tag-alongs" to weddings with us to get a feel for the flow and pace of the things. As long as you're not socially inept or rude, many photographers are more than willing to pass on some knowledge (even those of us who aren't clever enough to have big fancy websites!)

thank you, some one else agrees, the lens is the most important piece of the puzzle. by the way, what lenses are you shooting with? I use a Canon EF 70-200mm

This was a very thorough article. There truly is not many more things than a wedding to strike terror in the heart of a photographer. Today's expectations are so much more and different than when I got married, you truly have to step outside the box and be creative. - Nate

Thanks for the useful information! This is a solid outline of what the process is for wedding photography. Very helpful and practical. As an experienced wedding photographer, it is good to see people spend the time to develop the talent of up and coming photographers. Thanks for taking the time to share your insight and wisdom!
be blessed,

What a great read. Very insightful and a refreshing take on what is, undoubtedly one of the most scary projects to work on as a professional photographer.

Its nice to see all the BS stripped away, and the truth of the day be played out by someone how has a vast amount of experience in the field of wedding photography.

Great post...

While I really needed to read this last weekend, I've been told I have no option in photographing at some other upcoming weddings. I don't think people reliase that just because I can take a good photo doesn't automatically translate into winning wedding shots.

Still, as you say. If I've been approached it's because they like my work. I think.

Thanks for the tips for next time :)
