The basics of photography
There’s a lot to be said for going back to basics every now and again. Photography is quite a simple subject, but in order to be able to understand what your camera is doing, you’re going to have to know a thing or two about the simple basic theory of how it all fits together.
My mate Bill Huber has done a superb series of write-ups he calls the Basics of Photography.
Basically, it’s a thorough introduction to the ideas of photography, explained in the simplest language possible - without getting patronising! He uses the allegory of a see-saw to explain how shutter time and aperture, how they relate to each other, what aperture and shutter priority does on your camera. He then goes on to explain exposure compensation, depth of field, ISO, Vignetting, and a series of other useful topics.
If you’ve ever been confused about how it all hangs together, The Basics of Photography by Bill Huber will be the best article you’ll read in your photography career!
