I'll never forget standing at the counter in a famous Manhattan camera shop listening to a conversation between two students and the rental guy returning a huge Nikon fisheye worth $4000 (in 1982!!). "So you can see that tiny chip in the coating right at the front... and you didn't take out insurance.. right?". Take out insurance!!

@Airn:

Yeah the fact that Leo's doesn't rent Nikon lenses is a bit aggravating, but they should have a reasonable selection of Nikon-mount Sigma lenses that you can use.

I would appreciate your allowing me to mention Lens Lenders here in your comments section.

We are a Canadian company renting lenses to Canadian photographers through the mail.

We offer flat-rate pricing to anywhere in Canada; one price for the entire country. Our lenses include a UV filter, hood, soft case and are shipped inside Pelican containers. A return-shipping label is included with the rental and returns are as simple as bringing the lens to any Canada Post outlet.

I went to Leo's - they don't supply Nikon. Hrmph. Broadway Camera did, but nothing pro-sumer. I guess I'll have to rent the expensive cameras if I want to 'play'.

Rent locally when you can, this way you can go for 1 day rentals for instance. I had a good experience trying out a 17-55/2.8 Nikkor for an event. Now I have to own that lens...as does everybody. It's sold out in a lot places, but that's ok, I can't afford it, yet.

Renting is also a great way to try out an expensive piece of equipment in the field before shelling out big money for something that isn't quite what you expected.

I've used RentGlass before to rent a Canon wide angle EFS lens. The packaging used to ship (and return) the lens was excellent. Overall the experience was good.
