Val
Glad that you are interested in light painting. It is an art form that I have been working on for many years. The images you can create inspire the imagination! To answer your question if you leave the shutter of your camera open it will indeed make your image brighter. In general light painting is done in very dark environments, where if you shot a picture using a faster shutter speed your image would just be black. Light Painters use a combination of camera setting to fine tune the images. please feel free to check out my light painting work at jasondpage.com
and ask any questions you may have.

Hello,

I'm really interested in this - but I don't quite understand. If you leave the shutter open, doesn't it make you're picture brighter?

Thanks for a great article!!! I am busy with a basic photography course and one of our tasks is to take a photo using a 'painting with light' technique. These are some awesome ideas - doubt I'll get even close to them though, but thanks so much for the inspiration!

Amazing shots. It's been a while since I had a go with light painting but I really enjoyed it. This is one of my shots of a beached ship wreck:

When I saw the title of this article in my RSS Feed I thought it would be the old "move a light in front of your camera to make images"-thingy, but I'm happy I thought I wrong. :D
