I recently went to have some photos printing and they suggested cropping them to fit standard frame sizes to avoid custom framing. Honestly, the idea of altering a photo based on a shape rather then the natural balance of a photo disturbs me. My camera is 4:3, my previous camera is 3:2, but I have always cropped the photo based entirely on how the photo looked best. (I do have a slight tendency to make photos wider to fit the natural separation of human eyes) I really can't imagine attempting to conform to a ratio.

I tend to go the other way from you and stay away from 2:3 proportions whenever possible. All else being equal, I prefer odd sized crops with square and panoramic my favorites. I went on a 12x24" kick a few months back and printed several shots that size.

But I think it all comes down to the image. Some work in 2:3, some in square, and some in 10x30". One of the best features of digital photography to me is that it's so easy to print any size you want.

I primarily stick to 3:2, I tend to compose fairly tightly in-viewfinder, and I buy a lot of my framing and matting supplies in quantity, so anything outside of that ratio tends to be a hassle.

This has proven to be a mistake more than once. I've started attempting to intentionally shoot several cropping variations of the best situations, sometimes a project really requires a different crop.

I know what you mean... I get really upset when I have to crop a photo at something other than 3:2 (although they can turn out looking much nicer if the cropping is weird).
