DIY cable shutter

A while ago, we did a blog post on how to make your own camera remote control (link). In that post, I was complaining about how you could no longer use the old-fashioned cable shutter releases - a great loss, considering how cheap and foolproof they were, really.

Of course, one reader e-mailed us to point out that not all was lost, and that there was no real reason not to use these shutter releases - all you needed was a bit of DIY.

We found an article by David Coles, where he explains how he created a bracket for his Nikon Coolpix 950, but in theory, the same method could apply to all sorts of cameras. Sure, it’s low-tech, but it’s also cheap, and it works very well. Find out how, in the Nikon 950 Shutter Release Bracket article!

Has anyone tried adding a servo/solenoid with a remote control to something like this? I’m thinking of trying it, but i’m not very experienced with RC stuff. I’m thinking of mounting a servo/solenoid in front of the shutter release cable’s handle and using a toy car remote to remotely push the cable release button. The whole thing could probably be mounted on the side of a bracket like this (assuming it doesn’t cause any unwanted vibration). Does anyone have a link to a project like this?

I found a similar solution for HP cameras, although it seems to be a little harder to build.
