Win a Canon 1Ds Mark II and other goodies!
I got an e-mail from Crestock a while back, asking me if I wanted to be one of the judges for a photography competition. My response was something along the lines of ‘yah, sure, I’ll give it a whirl’, and then, I promptly forgot about it.
Then, they got back to me and told me what the competition prize is: A Canon EOS 1Ds mk2, complete with a Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM lens. ! I feel cheated, because by being one of the judges, I can’t enter the competition myself, and I obviously can’t win the goodies myself.
As such, I guess I’ll just write about the competition here on Photocritic: If I can’t win, I may as well give one of you lot the chance… Go on, dear readers, do me proud!
The competition runs for 9 weeks, split into 3 different rounds.
In each of the rounds, you can win a different prize: First up is a Leica D-Lux 3. Winning the second round bags you a Nikon D40x with a 18-55mm lens and a copy of Photoshop CS3. The final round wins you the grand prize of a Canon 1Ds Mark II with a 50mm f1.4 lens.
There are some really cool challenges for each of the rounds. “The Meaning of Life” is my favourite, but if you want to run off with the main prize, you’ll want to gun for “Speed Demon”. As one of the judges, I have my suspicions I’ll be paying special attention to round 2: “Feeling sexy”. Because I’m a pervert a particularly conscientious judge.
The first round (’meaning of life’) is accepting entries now:
“What’s the meaning of life? A question with many answers and interpretations, and that’s exactly what we want in the first round of photo contest. You are hereby authorized to let your creative juices flow wildly!”.
I can think of a couple of really groovy ideas around the theme, but obviously, I can’t just tell you what to do — get creative!
Go on, bounce over to the information page for the Crestock photography competition, and get your entries in!

Yeah…but if we actually know you, then we can’t win either, that’d look WELL dodgy. :)

anna: well, that’s true, but this blog gets hundreds of thousands of visitors a month - they can’t exclude everybody who reads it, either! That’s just silly.

They reserve the right to sell your image via sub-licensing without giving you a dime. I don’t really agree with that, so I have no plans to be entering this contest:
“By uploading Content to http://www.crestock.com, the Supplier admits a non-exclusive licence to display the uploaded Content on Crestock’s homepage (www.crestock.com). Furthermore this allows Crestock to sub-licence the uploaded image to Crestock’s customers for potential download. This in accordance with the terms of the Crestock Content Licence Agreement, a copy of which you have read, and acknowledge understanding and agreeing to.”

Be careful what you sign, indeed! :P

It appears that Ive jumped the gun with that last comment. That quote was from their main ToS and not the specific contest ToS which says that the images will *not* be re-sold.
The fact that there’s two conflicting policies is still kind of worrying to me though.

Hi Andrew
You beat me to the comment I was going to make - Of course I carefully checked their Terms and Conditions, to make sure it didn’t breach my own be careful what you sign advice :-)
For everybody else: the rules to this competition are perfectly safe, and are not photographer unfriendly. Specifically:
(emphasis mine)
So basically, you keep the copyright, they reserve the right to use your photos in connection with the contest (which is fair enough, because otherwise they couldn’t even show them on their website), and they promise not to sell the photos on or do other nasty things with them.
I do laud you though, Andrew, for checking this — if all photographers took a close look at the TnC’s, we’d have a lot less problems!

Oh man I’d love any of those prizes, I’ll try to enter but I won’t even make an honorable mention.

Hum. If I entered the second one and won, well… Well… It would be a nice guift for my dad… :)
However… I’d keep the EOS 1Ds MkII! :)
