Canon 400D / Digital Rebel XTi

previous article: next article:

400d.jpgI don’t normally write about camera equipment launches – there wouldn’t be much space for anything else on this blog if I did – but it’s rather worth noting that Canon are launching their brand new baby-brother of the digital SLR family, the 400D.

It’s a massive upgrade over the 350D: Coming with a 10 mpx CMOS sensor, the same 2.5″ screen found on the bigger brethren in the Digi-EOS range, continuous shooting at up to 3 fps of up to 27 shots, and a price-tag that is expected to be around the same as the current 350D (just below the US$1K mark – or less than £600 or so), it should be a fantastically exciting option worth considering.

Interestingly, it’s also the first camera that gets the new Canon EOS Integrated Cleaning System. For more info, see the video below!

Personally I bought myself a new 30D this week (my 20D was getting tired of the abuse), because I prefer the sturdier metal alloy body and the faster 5fps shooting, but if I was looking for an entry-level d-slr body, the 400D gets my hottest, warmest, and most sincere recommendations.

More info about the 400D can be had at my favourite camera reviews and news site, Digital Photo Review!

Money made from this advert will be invested in prime lenses.

I’m buying myself a digital slr and it will be canon but now i’m stuck between a 10mp sensor that cleans itself (ooo fancy hah) and the 30d which has 8mp and as you say 5fps, which is more what i need for my mountain boarding photography, its kind of a difficult choice though…agreed?

By Haje Jan Kamps on August 26th, 2006 (permalink)

Mr Walker: It isn’t really a difficult choice – you aren’t going to notice a difference between the 10 mp and the 8mp.

Besides, it’s more about sturdiness than anything else – if you abuse your cameras, a 30D is teh way forward. If not, go for a 350D or a 400D

Aargh… I just bought a new Canon Rebel last month to replace a broken one… No wonder there had been a price drop in the old model… :) I really would have liked teh anti-dust feture because of how often I bring my camera to the shore.

On the brightside, by the time I’m ready to upgrade, all these features will have migrated upwards…

So, the 550D and the 50D cost practically the same, and have different advantages. Which one would you buy?

  • • Seems a bit pointless to me, but Canon is buying the .canon top level domain: http://is.gd/aLJEp . Why? (link)

Macro Photography Photo Workshop by Haje Jan Kamps My day job, if it can be called that, is being a writer. I've got one book out there so far and it's awesome, so go ahead and buy a copy! It's available from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and most decent-sized bookshops, too!

Put another dime in the jukebox

Put another dime in the jukebox In front of you, five hyperactive men with guitars, drums, and microphones. Behind you, five thousand fans. In your hands, a camera... You're going to need more than just a little bit of good luck to pull this one off. That's where this book comes in.

With nearly a hundred fantastic gig photos, and a ton of info about how to get involved in taking photos like this yourself, you can't go wrong. Buy this book. Grab your camera. Good luck.

Street Photography: London

Street Photography: London Take a Canon EOS 450D. Attach a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens. Hit the streets of London. See what happens.

Sounds simple - but the results are anything but. Moving, intense, and personal, Street Photography: London is a great collection of the people of London, their passions, and their dreams. Look for yourself!

About

This site is all about learning more about photography, from the incredibly insightful (rarely) to the dreadfully mundane (also, hopefully rarely) via just about everything in between.

If this website seems a little whimsical and random, then that's because the author of this blog, who for the occasion is confusing himself by writing about himself in the third person, is slightly whimsical and random himself.

Enjoy!
