Bartering for camera gear

Posted by Haje Jan Kamps

Buying and selling camera gear via the internet can be a nice little side income - I have dabbled in it myself, at times (although I think I’m probably breaking even, rather than making any money, at the moment), mainly through scouring local camera stores and eBay for old (20-30 year old) camera gear
Some people take a lot more pride in their work, however, such as Liem:

The experiment started a bit accidentally. Last year, I purchased a 28-70mm f/2.8 Sigma lens on Craigslist for $100. The seller agreed. It turns out that the lens did not work fully with my 300d, so I almost returned it until I mentioned I was looking for a second body like d30. Well lo and behold, he just happened to be selling one…

In what turns out to be quite an amusing and enterprising tale, Liem managed to buy a Canon EOS 10D for $75 - after only two weeks of trading stuff on the internet.

“Oi, what’s that got to do with DIY photography”, I hear you cry. Well, perhaps nothing. But I always admire people who have great ideas and manage to make them work. With this guy, it’s photography related, and he managed to get himself a pretty good deal - a DSLR with various gear for less money than a new compact digital camera. Can’t argue with that!

He does seem to have neglected to mention time spent (apart from in the last sentence) and whether or not the income tax man found him :)

Yeah, picking up and getting rid of gear on various online sights can be a great experience. I just offloaded some gear on craigslist for the first time a few weeks ago and it was a great way to pull in some extra cash and looking around, there are definitely some awesome deals on used gear out there.
There are some trick to eliminate risk and speed up sales/trades and I put some of them down here:

Thanks for the post, maybe I’ll have the guts to trade-up sometime.

About

This site is all about learning more about photography, from the incredibly insightful (rarely) to the dreadfully mundane (also, hopefully rarely) via just about everything in between.

If this website seems a little whimsical and random, then that's because the author of this blog, who for the occasion is confusing himself by writing about himself in the third person, is slightly whimsical and random himself.

Enjoy!
