365 project

previous article: next article:

For the longest time, I’ve thought that I wouldn’t have it in me to do a 356 project – i.e. a photo per day for a whole year. If I think about the past five years, for example, there has never been a whole year where I would have been consistently able to post a photo per day. I mean, hell, my whole Flickr stream dates back to August 2006 and only 728 photos in it. That’s an average of 0.6 photos per day or so.

I’m not even sure if I want to subject the world to a project like that. I don’t really like posting photos to Flickr that I’m not reasonably happy with (even though I, too, have a load of junk in my Flickr stream, of course)… Could I really get 365 photos together over the course of a year?

Then I started to think. I mean, I have a lot of respect for people who pull off ambitious projects, and I’ve seen shots from 365 projects that are creative, fun, moving, intense, moody, acrobatic, inspirational, retro-tastic, and ethereal.

How many days in 2010?

So, for 2010, I have decided to join the fray. And Randy made the silly suggestion of being my running mate, which gave me an idea… Perhaps more people fancy joining in.

Since there is no way in heaven or hell that I’ll be able to post a photo a day for a whole year, I can’t make that commitment. What I can do, however, is that I will post 365 photos to my Flickr stream in 2010. I’ll even make an attempt to post an average of 30 photos per month. I might even manage to do an average of 7 photos per week.

That sounds like a lot of mathematics…

One of my less hopeless self-portraits of 2009, taken in Vietnam (clicky for bigger)

… And how do I know whether I’m running behind or not? Well, of course, there had to be a geeky solution: I made a simple counter to keep me (and you, if you like) on track… So if my 365/2010 project has fewer photos in it than the counter would indicate, feel free to give me a firm kick up the jacksie to keep me going!

I need more running mates!

As mentioned, Randy offered to join the fray, but I’d like to keep track of more of you guys who are about to start a project for 365… Post a comment, send me an e-mail, poke me Twitter, send me some smoke signals, or organise a carrier pigeon to let me know!

Money made from this advert will be invested in prime lenses.

Alright…I’ll join you. I’d never be able to snap a pic a day, either…my attention span tends to peter out around day 2 but this seems a lot more easy. Hopefully!

Godd luck for your 365 project! You will need it. I’ve just finished mine and I’m not sure if I ever want another one but it was still a great thing and always will be.

I was recently thinking about starting a 365-project, to expand my photographic skills and because I think it could be a fun project to do (every project has ups and downs). My 365 won’t contain self-portraits though; I’ll capture a “detail” a day. Maybe we could even start a group pool on Flickr to keep each other inspired! I’ll post 1/365 later today on http://www.flickr.com/photos/ivonoppen/ and on my photoblog.

hi!
I’m starting my 365 project today.
I will post my photos on my Flickr account but also on my Photoblog (http://www.photoblog.com/eleonora85/).
Good luck and enjoy your work!

I’m gonna try it. I had to laugh at the counter: “If you have less than 0 pictures. . . you’re behind!”

This is probably the first, last, and only day I will have enough pictures in my stream.

I’m in! I’m looking forward to learning about photography and experimenting. I think for the first time in years I’ve found a proper new hobby! Yes it’s going to be challenging – I think I might have to follow suit and aim for the 365 in total rather than strictly one per day – as who knows where my schedule will take me! But it’s game on!

It is a big project but you can do it. Just remember that it is only one day at a time! Go for it.

By John Cavan on January 2nd, 2010 (permalink)

Already doing it! That was my big photographic resolution for 2010 and I’ve already started with day 1 on my site.

By Tom on January 2nd, 2010 (permalink)

I’m trying too but I know it is not easy!
Good luck!

By Danny on January 4th, 2010 (permalink)

Already doing so as of the first of 2010 (just posted the 3rd picture)

I’m already struggling with this but heyyyyyy…. i’m more than willing to join this fray too ;)

I’m with you brother – just added you as a friend of flickr, so I’ll keep an eye out for your stuff.

I’ve started a self portrait 365. I don’t think I will post or display until the project is complete.

Good luck to all! This is a huge undertaking.

I’ve also decided to jump on the 365 bandwagon this year. I’ve got around five shots up so far. Good luck everyone!

Sweet, I’m stoked that so many are taking part! Looks like a mini-marathon :)

I’ll post details back on mine soon, but I’m taking a hybrid approach. Like Haje, I don’t want to inundate potential followers with a pic everyday. But I’m also sure I can do a pic a day, I think I averaged 3.5 a day last year anyway just with my iPhone. So I’ll be doing a staggered upload to keep things a little more digestible.

Good luck all!

You cheat… I took that pic-a-ture.

By DLMdoc on January 6th, 2010 (permalink)

I started the 365 project this year as well. So far so good! lol

Gotta think ahead to things I can take pics of when I’m stuck one day.

By MisterSimbol on January 7th, 2010 (permalink)

I will try this in 2011! I missed out starting this year and I need to find more motivation to get this project going.

Btw, what’s the right way to do a Project 365? is it to post a picture everyday (even if they were not taken on the same day itself) or take a picture every calendar day and posting it?

By Mark on January 7th, 2010 (permalink)

I started 365 this year.

Taking 365 (hopefully) good photos in a year isn’t very hard. It’s taking 1 a day that brings the challenge. And finally posting it every day i a whole different challenge — one that is impossible for me.

I’ll do my best though.

Good luck, all!

By Mia Rose on January 8th, 2010 (permalink)

This is just the challenge that I need, so count me in! I think a good start is to keep my camera with me at all times. You just never know when the opportunity may present itself to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary!

Warm wishes,

Thanks for the great idea! I’ve always wanted to do a 365 project but just like you, knew there was no way in hell I’d be able to post a picture a day. Your workaround gave me the push I needed to get started!

Does it has to be a 365-project? I liked the idea, but found out that it was overly ambitious for me so I created a 52 pictures per year project instead.

Started mine – it’s addictive – take a peak if you so desire;

I started mine on January 1st not knowing what to expect. Must say that so far it has been a lot of fun and not as tough to do as I though. I shoot something every day but find it easier to post the images once a week. Good luck!

I started my 365 day project last year on my birthday. I take photos everyday during my lunch break during the week and anytime on the weekend. I also post a photo a day on this website http://otl.aminus3.com/ Sometimes it is a photo that I took from that day, but sometimes I post a series. Giving a time limit (lunchtime) helps me truly focus on what I need to do. I may not always get great shots but I learn what works and what doesn’t for certain situations.

By ADDISON on January 19th, 2010 (permalink)

AHHHH! it’s sooo exciting to read all this! so inspiring! i need to meet others in the same boat. but ive decided to take a different approach…..”anything creative” each day! mostly it’s been watercolors , patterns, collage, and doodles but who knows where it will go! the key for me is not to over think it! just do….and it’s become addicting! go check it out!

anyone else get an email because of copyright for sharing this link? what’s the point of letting us share the link with other social sites only to have it removed?

By Haje Jan Kamps on January 25th, 2010 (permalink)

Aaron – there’s a pretty big difference between linking to an article and copying the whole thing. I have a feeling that is what might have happened.

By Paul Manoian on February 7th, 2010 (permalink)

Good luck! I know what you mean by not always be able to post photos. That’s exactly why I decided to use an iPhone for my 365 project this year … I always have it with mean which means I have more chances to great shots.

Put another dime in the jukebox

Put another dime in the jukebox In front of you, five hyperactive men with guitars, drums, and microphones. Behind you, five thousand fans. In your hands, a camera... You're going to need more than just a little bit of good luck to pull this one off. That's where this book comes in.

With nearly a hundred fantastic gig photos, and a ton of info about how to get involved in taking photos like this yourself, you can't go wrong. Buy this book. Grab your camera. Good luck.

About

This site is all about learning more about photography, from the incredibly insightful (rarely) to the dreadfully mundane (also, hopefully rarely) via just about everything in between.

If this website seems a little whimsical and random, then that's because the author of this blog, who for the occasion is confusing himself by writing about himself in the third person, is slightly whimsical and random himself.

Enjoy!
