I can’t deny that these guys are way braver than I am: I don’t think I’d be too happy to take my own camcorder or digital camera under water in what is essentially a plastic bag. But I think the solution could be very useful if you take photos in the streaming rain, at least.
Underwater photography equipment will typically set you back more money than the camera itself, so it is no wonder that people come up with some really exciting solutions! Read the rest of the article »

So, you are into your long exposure photography, such as night-time or macro photography? To get top quality photos, you’re going to need a remote control. And most of the time, this is going to set you back quite a lot of money, especially as the cheap as chips screw in type cable releases don’t work on new cameras anymore. f295 has started a new Do-It-Yourself (DIY) photography forum dedicated to the art and craft of self-made equipment. Fabulous! Already, f295 has a rather established forum dedicated to pinhole photography. The ethos of “owning the process” inherent in pinhole photography naturally grew into this new forum. Of all things when working with macro photography, light is the biggest problem. Of course, there are hordes of ways to solve it, but many of these ways are quite expensive.
The main problem is that you need to get really close, and your lens will get in the way of the light. As such, you would use a ring-flash. These can be clumsy and expensive, too.

A Lomo camera is essentially a really, really low quality camera built in Russia. That doesn’t stop it from having a nearly religious following, however, and with the right attitude when wielding one of these cameras, it can be a very liberating photography experience. There are quite a few photos on Flicr tagged with pringlesmacro now - in other words, photos done with our DIY macro-lens built out of a Pringles clan.
If you don’t use Flickr, you totally should. And if you do, why not tag your Pringles Macro photos so it gets added to that same gallery?

Pinhole photography is one of the oldest classics in the Photography book. It isn’t difficult either, and with a few pointers and some trial and error, you could easily build yourself a pinhole photography box in an afternoon, with only the bare minimum of expenses.
Of course, it is all a lot easier if you get a good, longish description of how to do it. My dear friend Katie has an excellent introduction in her blog, titled “Teaching a cardboard box to be a camera” - An excellent starting point indeed. Read the rest of the article »
